Activities:
1. Provincial Chronic Respiratory Strategy: "Alberta Breathes" – a newly developing collaborative plan uniting Alberta’s respiratory agencies and 9 Health Regions, which aims to support and foster solutions for exemplary care. For more information, call 1-888-203-CANA (2262).
2. World Asthma Day – an Alberta-wide campaign to promote awareness about current asthma prevalence, diagnosis and management. Addressing gaps in Alberta’s application of current Canadian Guidelines, we promote the use of spirometry, Action Plans, and asthma education (particularly the uptake of services rendered by Certified Asthma Educators (CAE)). See also www.cnac.net, www.asthmaguidelines.ca, and www.ginasthma.com.
3. World COPD Day – an Alberta-wide campaign to promote awareness about current COPD prevalence, prevention, diagnosis and management. Smoking prevention and cessation are key messages, along with targeted spirometry for those with smoking history and symptoms, congruent with current Canadian Guidelines. See also www.copdguidelines.ca and www.goldcopd.com.
4. System Map – continuing development, pilot testing, and implementation of an e-solution navigational tool, which provides a one-stop-shop of available tools, guidelines and services for Alberta’s respiratory practitioners. For more information, email membership@canahome.org.
5. New Resources – our Task Forces have recently developed a couple of clinical resources, the first 2 of which are now accessible on our website (www.canahome.org) under ‘key resources’. Updates to these resources will be made on an ongoing basis as necessary:
• Canadian Asthma Guidelines Summary – 2 pg, 8.5 x 11 size which conveniently lays out key pediatric and adult practice points. 5,000 laminated color copies were distributed across Alberta in September 2005, targeting all Family Doctors, all Pediatricians, all Respiratory Therapists, all Residents, CANA members, and asthma clinics.
• Provincial Resource Catalogue – 78 pg, 5x7 sized booklet of provincial services for COPD & Asthma, organized alphabetically by health region. 500 color copies were distributed across Alberta in April 2006, targeting Family Physicians with a special interest, Respirologists, Allergists, CANA members, and all asthma clinics. It also includes listings of Allergists, PF Labs, Organizations (provincial, national & international), Respiratory Educator Training courses, and Suppliers.
• Provincial Asthma Action Plan – a standardized patient self-management plan for Alberta developed by a multidisciplinary Task Force, including advice from Alberta’s general practitioners and specialists. It aims to address literacy and language issues for all patient ages, while emphasizing symptom control and patient self-management. It is available as a fillable PDF, html (easily inserted into existing software applications) and also as a full color triplicate tear-off pad.
